John Sullivan worked at Winterville Mounds Park in Greenville Mississippi before working for BLM, Southeastern States Field Office.
Winterville is a Mississippian Mound Site managed by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, while there, in addition to conservation of the mounds, a little archaeology, John and the Winterville staff gave tours to school and adult groups, education programs on archaeology, Southeastern Native American life, past and present, on site and in the classroom. He was instrumental in starting an annual festival high lighting Native Americans for Mississippi’s Archaeology Month. Now that John is working for the BLM, he still goes to school rooms giving talks and demonstrations on Southeastern Native American life ways.
Project Archaeology for Mississippi and the Southeastern States Field Office had a fantastic coordinator in Patrice Junius. She passed away in 2006 and unfortunately Project Archaeology program coordinator position stayed vacant until John came on board to the BLM. John has gone to a few schools during his tenure at BLM, but mostly his outreach is at festivals in Mississippi and Alabama. He has given out Project Archaeology material to teachers along with info on when there are classes. John is working up a teacher list for the local area and the state, to let history and social studies teachers know that he is available for classroom presentations.
